Asynchronous collaboration

Async communications means you don't have to respond right away. Async communication fosters flexibility and lets people finish whatever they are working on, undisturbed.

Tips for async communication

  1. Be clear and open about your intent, your requests and your deadlines to avoid back-and-forths.
  2. Assume positive intent. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Assume that your team members are making decisions regarding their actions with the best intentions and are doing the best that they can.
  3. Acknowledge one another. "Good morning!" can go a long way.

Synchronous collaboration

While we strive to do most of our work asynchronously, sometimes synchronous communication is great too. The trick is to prepare and make sure all participants are utilized. We follow the philosophy of Sherpany's article on how to successfully prepare for a synchronous meeting.
